It will go straight up the High Street and turn up Cavendish Road to the Recreation Ground. If you are not in the procession please see if you can find the time to line the route and cheer the procession. 6.45pm - 8.00pm Markyate Has Talent This is to be staged outside using a trailer lorry with a side curtain as the stage. Hertfordshire County Council will be seeking to reduce energy use, carbon footprint and £1.3m of annual cost by turning off about 80% of street lights across the county between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 6:00am. The Parish Council raised concerns regarding the impact on local residents and a potential increase in crime. The County Council responded with suggested evidence from areas where the scheme is already in operation that show no increase in crime or accidents arising from the changes. The Council have been given the opportunity to identify limited and critical lighting in Markyate which must remain lit overnight due to safety concerns.
A firm schedule for the implementation of this change in Markyate is not yet available but is due to complete within Q1 2012.

When in full bloom they certainly make a welcome and pleasing addition to Markyate. The sense of civic pride taken in our village sets a good example to us all, and is greatly appreciated. |
The Government has introduced a new National Planning Policy Framework. This seeks to support sustainable development, this being termed a ‘change for the better’. Full details can be found on: http://www.communities.gov.uk/documents/planningandbuilding/pdf/2115939.pdf. Importantly, the framework states that development that is sustainable should go ahead, without delay – a presumption in favour of sustainable development that is the basis for every plan, and every decision. This framework sets out clearly what could make a proposed plan or development unsustainable. The framework reduces the complexity of National planning guidelines from over 1000 pages to 50. Of course, it remains to be seen in practice how this will work. DBC must now align its strategic plans with the new guidelines and both the PC and DBC must take them into account when making all future planning decisions.

The Parish Council has been actively considering how best to maximise the use of the Village and Y2K Halls. This strategy will be outlined at the Annual Gathering on 17th April which proposes swapping the halls available to some hirers and making better use of the space available. In addition, we are looking at the feasibility of increasing the capacity of the Village Hall, and thereby increasing the number of potential hirers. We are currently evaluating the costs and a presentation will be given at the Annual Gathering. |

The local police reported an increase in theft of catalytic converters from local cars and vans. Thieves are stealing these due to the rare metals used in the converters. They believe that gangs of crooks from outside of the local area are involved. Please be extra vigilant. The police reported a further incident of dogs attacking other dogs. These are extremely sad to report and the Police again remind local residents that it is their responsibility to ensure that their dogs are controlled at all times, this includes making sure that they are secure whilst in homes and gardens. For those intrepid souls who venture out into the wilds of Markyate’s local countryside, a welcome sight has been seen. 3 new benches have been placed at the following locations, one at the cross of footpath 22 and 23 to the rear of Peggy’s Field, one on footpath 18 by Cotton Spring and the third on footpath 17 by Buckwood Road. The benches provide a welcome opportunity to sit, rest and contemplate the great views of the Hertfordshire countryside. The PC wishes to thank Councillor Mayer for his sterling work in getting these installed and P3 for making funding available. |
MANPAD is a unit of Bedfordshire police officers dedicated to the security of London Luton Airport. They are currently engaging local communities situated close to the airport in a government backed initiative which asks that the public be their "eyes and ears" on the ground reporting anything considered suspicious. MANPAD gave a presentation to the Parish Council which will also be delivered at various locations to the public through the year. They stressed that at present there is no known intelligence of any terrorist threat in our area of any kind, and wish the public to be aware that every effort is being made to reduce the risk of a terrorist related incident. |
We kindly ask all drivers to please take note of the KEEP CLEAR markings on the corner junction at the top of the high street. All too often drivers waiting at the traffic lights to exit onto the A5 block this turning preventing residents from getting in and out. At busy times this can cause a dangerous queue back onto the A5. Your support in this is much appreciated. |
