Who Does What? Local government in Hertfordshire has three layers, each providing different services. 1 Hertfordshire County Council 2 Dacorum Borough Council 3 Parish or Town Councils
Markyate Parish Council owns and looks after the recreational ground in Pickford Road (known locally at Peggy’s Field) and the Y2K Hall. The Village Hall is owned by Dacorum Borough Council and managed by Markyate Parish Council. The recreation ground in Cavendish Road is owned by Dacorum Borough Council, the whole area is leased to the Parish Council and then the playing field area is sub leased to Markyate Football and Cricket Club who maintain the grounds. The play area in Peggy’s Field was completely renewed in 2005 at a cost of approximately £37,000.00. This was funded by Dacorum Borough Council and the Police Initiative Fund. Markyate Parish Council contributed approximately £3,000 towards this project. The Village Hall is owned by Dacorum Borough Council but managed by Markyate Parish Council. The Y2K Hall is owned by Markyate Parish Council and was built in 2000 as a Millennium project. There are 16 Parish or Town Councils in Dacorum outside Hemel Hempstead. All parishes employ a clerk , to pay for this and other expenses, Dacorum Borough Council add an amount called a Parish Precept or Parish tax to the Council Tax of people who live in the relevant area.
